WHAT IT HELPS YOU DO
See the cost behind a box of cookies.
The clearly labeled fictional six-cookie-box example shows how ingredients, packaging, labor, overhead and modeled fees affect a selling unit. The example is a pricing demonstration, not a recipe or a customer result.
- Register ingredient purchase prices and quantities.
- Include batch labor, overhead, packaging and an ingredient allowance.
- Model a target margin after your entered selling fees, with upward price rounding.
- Compare profit and margin at an optional actual selling price.

A FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE
How much should I charge for a box of cookies?
Start with the recipe cost, then include the work around it. The included example makes 24 sellable cookies, packed six to a box: four complete selling units.
- Add the ingredient cost and any extra ingredient allowance.
- Include batch labor and overhead, then allocate those costs across complete boxes.
- Add packaging per box and model the selling fees you expect to pay.
- Choose a target margin, round the modeled price upward and compare it with your current price.
In the fictional example, cost before selling fees is about $6.59 per box. A $9 selling price leaves about $1.84 after the entered costs and modeled fees. The target-margin model rounds to $10.50, leaving about $3.29. Entered labor is already included; profit is before personal income tax.
These figures demonstrate the worksheet, not a suggested price or a customer result. Use your own costs and check what buyers will pay.
Watch the cookie-pricing walkthrough ↗What the example assumes
45 minutes of batch labor at $20/hour; $2 batch overhead; $1.20 packaging per box; a 5% extra ingredient allowance; modeled fees of 3% plus $0.30 per box; a 30% target margin; and upward rounding to $0.25 steps. Calculations use full precision; displayed figures are rounded.
Margin is different from markup
Margin divides profit by selling price. Markup divides profit by cost. This workbook solves for the target margin after your entered costs and modeled selling fees, then compares the result with your optional actual selling price.
